Five dead and hundreds injured as violence engulfs Ugandan capital

From Christine Acen in Kampala At least five people are feared to have been shot dead Friday by Ugandan security forces and hundreds are flowing to hospitals  here as protesters engaged the police and the military in running battles with the police. Live bullets were used by the police against the protesters as the security forces tried to disperse angry crowds around the capital and in other parts of the country. The protests were sparked when a rumor spread around the city claiming that the leader of Uganda’s opposition political parties, Dr Kizza Besigye had died in hospital following his arrest and brutal beating by the Uganda police Thursday. CIA behind ‘Walk to Work’ protests – Matsanga claims

Letter from Kampala: Besigye in hospital after brutal police beating

From Christine Acen in Kampala Security operatives and police commanded by Kampala Metropolitan Commander Grace Turyagumanawe arrested opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, for the fourth time but this time in his car. The police cornered the opposition leader at the Mulago roundabout causing a lot of chaos and drama. After stopping his car, the police asked the occupants to get out and when they refused, one man, in plain clothes but holding a pistol, shuttered Dr Besigye’s vehicle windows and a police man sprayed teargas inside the car, forcing the occupants to jump out of their car. Britain expels Malawi envoy to Court of St James

By Henry Gombya Acting Malawian High Commissioner Flossie Gomile-Chidyaonga and all her dependants ordered out of Britan. On her office wall is the image of the Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika. The acting Malawian representative to the Court of St James has been expelled from Britain and all her dependants ordered to leave at the same time after the southern Africa country did the same to Britain’s envoy to Lilongwe. The order for Mrs Flossie Gomile-Chidyaonga and her relatives to leave London was given early Wednesday by Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague.
