Gangsters get away with KShs54million bank heist

By Collins Wanzala Police in Nairobi are investigating an incident in which suspected gangsters struck at Barclays Bank in Eastleigh on Sunday evening and made away with KShs54million. Three bank employees and two security guards who were on duty at the bank are being held by police on suspicion of robbery. According to police sources, three gangsters armed with guns attacked the bank posing as customers. The police want to know how the bank manager let armed police officers who were on duty on the material day leave and then allowed customers in after working hours. Kampala magistrates court defers journalists case

By Our Correspondent in Kampala Kampala Chief Magistrate Joyce Kavuma has differed a ruling in a forgery case against the Daily Monitor Managing Editor, Daniel Kalinaki and the paper’s political editor Henry Ochieng. It is alleged that the duo, between July 31, 2009 and August 2, 2009 at the Monitor publication offices in Kampala, published a letter by President Museveni that appeared to have been altered from the correct one written by the Ugandan leader in which he was proposing that elective positions in Bunyoro be ring-fenced formatives that are out-numbered by the majority immigrants. Kenyan army creating havoc among Al Shabaab hierarchy

Sudanese leaders meet to discuss deepening crisis over oil

The presidents of Sudan and South Sudan are meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa ahead of the African Union annual meeting, to discuss a deepening crisis over sharing their oil wealth. When South Sudan became independent last July, Sudan lost most of its oil. However, the export pipelines go through Sudan, which has seized some $815m (£520m) in oil revenue, accusing the south of not paying transit fees. South Sudan last week said it was suspending oil production, accusing Sudan of “stealing” its oil. Kenya Police release proof Mungiki never met at State House

By Collins Wanzala in Nairobi Police in Kenya have released names of 33 people from eight different groups who visited State House on November 26, 2007 and held a meeting with President Mwai Kibaki and the then head of the Civil Service Mr. Francis Muthaura, describing them as youths who went to petition the President to help the youths in reciprocation of campaigning for him. Libya’s transitional government struggling to exert control

AMISOM to train Somali police

By Collins Wanzala in Nairobi The Police Component of the African Union Mission for Somalia (AMISOM) has launched a capacity building and leadership-training, contributing to an ongoing Somali Police Force (SPF) training of 97 junior police commanders. The training which is currently underway at Brigadier General Kahiye Police Academy in Mogadishu has been organized and funded by the Somali Police Force. A statement released by AMISOM  said that the 12-week training course will equip junior Somali police commanders selected from various police stations across Mogadishu with skills and knowledge to perform their duties in newly liberated areas of Mogadishu. Congolese businessman denies Kabila accusations

Al Shabaab now forcibly recruiting young boys

By Collins Wanzala in Nairobi The war on Al-Shabaab has a taken a new dimension as fighters in southern regions of Somalia on Saturday issued strict orders against young boys living under their control especially in Lower and middle Shabelle region in southern Somalia to join the ongoing battle against the United Nations (UN) backed Somalia government and African Union  (AU) peacekeepers in Mogadishu.
