Kenyan deputy president seeks Hague trial delay

Kenyan deputy president William Ruto has asked for the start of his trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to be delayed to allow his legal team more time to prepare, his lawyer said on Friday. Judges have yet to rule on the request, but previously they have granted delays in other trials relating to post-election violence in Kenya just over five years ago. Ruto stands accused of orchestrating the violence, alongside Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. His trial had been due to begin on May 28, but his lawyers say that late disclosure of potentially exculpatory evidence by the prosecutor had made it impossible for them to … Continue reading

Kenya: Uhuru Kenyatta challenges ICC case

Lawyers for Kenya’s President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta have urged the International Criminal Court to drop charges against him.  He denies accusations of instigating violence after the disputed 2007 poll. The special hearing came a week after charges against his co-accused, Francis Muthaura, were dramatically dropped. Mr Kenyatta’s lawyers argue charges against him are now compromised but the ICC prosecutor has said she has additional evidence against him. The trial of Mr Kenyatta, who narrowly passed the 50% threshold to win elections earlier this month, is scheduled to start in July. In the aftermath of the election in December 2007 – when Raila Odinga narrowly lost to incumbent President Mwai Kibaki – more … Continue reading

Peace holds in heartlands of Kenya’s election losers

Strongholds of defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga were peaceful on Sunday, apparently reflecting a desire by Kenyans to avoid a repeat of the bloodshed that followed the last election five years ago. Odinga has refused to concede the election to rival Uhuru Kenyatta, but said he would challenge the result in the courts and urged his supporters to refrain from the violence that convulsed Kenya when he lost the disputed vote of 2007. A smooth handover of power this time around is seen as critical to restoring Kenya’s reputation as a stable democracy and safe investment destination – an image that was shattered by the mayhem that followed the last … Continue reading

ICC Kenyatta trial ‘may be delayed’ on defence complaint

International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutors say they do not object to delaying the trials of four prominent Kenyans charged with fuelling violence. One of the suspects, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, is contesting next week’s presidential elections. The ICC trials, over violence that broke out after the disputed 2007 election, was due to start in April. But defence lawyers complained that they had not been given enough time to prepare for the cases. ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah said judges had not yet decided whether to delay the trials, the Associated Press news agency reports. But the prosecutors’ comment, in written filings posted on the ICC website, makes it likely … Continue reading

Somalis welcome AMISOM troops after fall of three towns

The Somali National Army and African Union forces from the Ugandan Contingent were last week warmly welcomed by residents of Jannale, Aw Dheegle, and Barrire after the three towns fell to the Allied Forces. In an email to The London Evening Post, Major Henry Obbo, the Spokesperson of Uganda Contingent said that after the simultaneous capture of the three towns, hundreds of civilians including those who were released from Al-Shabaab prison by the African Union troops in Jannale thronged the streets to cheer the Allied Forces. Man killed assembling bomb before Kenya political rally

A man was killed when the bomb he was apparently trying to assemble near a Kenyan primary school before it hosted a presidential candidate’s rally exploded, police said on Sunday. Residents heard a blast late on Saturday night in the eastern frontier town of Garissa but police said they only identified the site of the explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) at a primary school field on Sunday. Martha Karua, the only female presidential candidate in the March 4 vote and among the lower-ranked contenders according to most polls, had been expected to speak at the grounds on Sunday afternoon, regional police chief Charlton Mureithi said. “Our initial … Continue reading

Uhuru Kenyatta free to run after Kenya election ruling

Kenya’s deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta – accused of crimes against humanity – can stand in next month’s election, after a court declined to bar him. The High Court refused to rule in a case brought by campaign groups seeking to exclude him from the 4 March poll Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto deny the charges brought against them in The Hague. They are due to go on trial in April at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with the violence that followed disputed elections in 2007. Dismissing the case against Kenyatta, the principal judge of the high court, Mbogholi Msagha, said it did not have jurisdiction … Continue reading

Kenyatta, running for president, wants Hague trial postponed

Kenyan presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta has asked for his trial on crimes against humanity charges to be delayed to allow time to prepare his defense given prosecutors’ late disclosure of evidence, his lawyers said on Thursday. Kenyatta, a former Finance Minister, is accused at the International Criminal Court (ICC) of orchestrating bloody clashes in which 1,200 people died and thousands were uprooted from their homes after disputed elections in December 2007. While his lawyers said a trial delay was needed to let them respond to evidence disclosed at the last minute by prosecutors, many analysts say Kenyatta would benefit if the trial were postponed until well after the March 4 … Continue reading

Obama urges Kenya to avoid violence as election looms

US President Barack Obama has urged the people of Kenya, where his father was born, to avoid violence and intimidation in next month’s elections. He posted the message, which begins with a greeting in Swahili, on YouTube. He said the polls were a chance for Kenyans to come together to show they were not just members of tribes or ethnic groups, but a proud nation. Kenya’s disputed presidential election in 2007 descended into violence in which more than 1,000 were killed. Kenyans head to the polls on 4 March to vote for president and other offices in the first national election since that violence. “Kenya must reject intimidation and violence … Continue reading

Kenyan MPs triple their wages again in end-of-term bonuses

Kenyan legislators have tripled their end-of-term bonuses once again, sweetening the deal with extra perks like diplomatic passports and security for life as well as state funerals when they die. The lawmakers first attempted to triple the bonus they will each receive when their five-year term ends this month to 9.3 million shillings (66,464 pounds) in October, a move the president rejected. But in a final act before parliament closes ahead of elections on March 4, legislators passed two bills awarding themselves the bonuses, at a late-night sitting on Wednesday. They also demanded diplomatic passports for themselves and their spouses, long-life security paid for by taxpayers, as well as the … Continue reading
