Sudanese military shielding Ugandan warlord

The fugitive African Ugandan warlord, Gen Joseph Kony is said to have recently found safe haven in territory controlled by Sudan, a watchdog group said Friday, accusing the Sudanese military of offering aid to commanders of the Lord’s Resistance Army. The US-based group ‘Resolve’ said in a new report that Kony recently directed killings from an enclave protected by the Sudanese military. Until early this year, according to the report, Kony and some of his commanders were operating in Kafia Kingi, a disputed area along the Sudan-South Sudan border where African Union troops tasked with catching Kony don’t have access. “The enclave is currently controlled by Sudan, and numerous eyewitness … Continue reading

Somalia’s Supreme Court has freed a journalist imprisoned for interviewing a woman who alleged she had been raped by security forces. Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim, 27, and his interviewee were jailed in February after being convicted of offending state institutions. In early March the woman was freed on appeal, but the journalist, who did not report the story, was held in jail. The Supreme court said on Sunday that charges against him had been dropped. Leaving court, the journalist said: “I’m very happy that I got my freedom back, I thank those who worked on this process that helped my release including my lawyers.” The case prompted an outcry from human … Continue reading

US: Islamic extremists moving freely between Nigeria, Mali, raising terror attack fears

Islamic extremists continue to move freely between Nigeria and northern Mali, despite the ongoing French military operation there against them, the United States ambassador to Nigeria said Thursday. As extremist shootings, bombings and kidnappings of foreigners continue unstopped across northern Nigeria, U.S. Ambassador Terence McCulley said halting the violence remained a top priority of the Washington government. However, McCulley declined to answer questions about U.S. plans to operate a drone base in neighboring Niger — which would allow the aircraft to monitor Nigeria as well. Officials “have seen reports for years” about fighters from the radical Islamic extremist network Boko Haram traveling to Mali to receive training there, said McCulley, … Continue reading

Guinea opposition pulls out of legislative elections process

Guinea’s opposition coalition has withdrawn from preparations for long-delayed legislative polls and may stage nationwide protests, claiming the run up to the vote has been flawed, an opposition spokesman said on Sunday. The election set for May 12 is intended to be the last step in the West African country’s transition to civilian rule after two years under a violent army junta following the death of long-time leader Lansana Conte in 2008. President Alpha Conde won a 2010 presidential election, but delays in the legislative vote have deepened a political deadlock and led to intermittent violence. “We have all decided purely and simply to pull out of the electoral process … Continue reading

USAID chief first highest US official to visit Somalia in years

Signalling the latest step forward in rapidly strengthening U.S.-Somalia relations, the administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) spent five hours in Mogadishu Thursday, the highest ranking U.S. administration official to visit Somalia’s capital in years. The U.S. is embracing the new government in Mogadishu, a formerly war-torn city that has seen about 18 months of relative peace after African Union troops ousted al-Qaida-linked militants. Last month the U.S. formally recognized Somalia’s government for the first time in two decades, during a visit to Washington by Somalia’s president. It was less than two years ago that Rajiv Shah, the administrator of USAID, visited a Kenyan refugee camp filled … Continue reading

Man killed assembling bomb before Kenya political rally

A man was killed when the bomb he was apparently trying to assemble near a Kenyan primary school before it hosted a presidential candidate’s rally exploded, police said on Sunday. Residents heard a blast late on Saturday night in the eastern frontier town of Garissa but police said they only identified the site of the explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) at a primary school field on Sunday. Martha Karua, the only female presidential candidate in the March 4 vote and among the lower-ranked contenders according to most polls, had been expected to speak at the grounds on Sunday afternoon, regional police chief Charlton Mureithi said. “Our initial … Continue reading

Uhuru Kenyatta free to run after Kenya election ruling

Kenya’s deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta – accused of crimes against humanity – can stand in next month’s election, after a court declined to bar him. The High Court refused to rule in a case brought by campaign groups seeking to exclude him from the 4 March poll Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto deny the charges brought against them in The Hague. They are due to go on trial in April at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with the violence that followed disputed elections in 2007. Dismissing the case against Kenyatta, the principal judge of the high court, Mbogholi Msagha, said it did not have jurisdiction … Continue reading

France wants the African-led military mission in Mali to be replaced with a United Nations peacekeeping mandate by April, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Wednesday. “From the moment that security is assured, we can envisage without changing the structures that it can be placed under the framework of U.N. peacekeeping operations,” Fabius told reporters. Asked if the aim was to have this done by April, he said: “Yes. Our experts and those we are working with are aiming for that.” According to diplomats at the United Nations, the Security Council is looking at adopting a resolution at the end of February or early March to replace the current African mission under … Continue reading

Pirates seize French tanker, 17 crew off Ivory Coast

Suspected Nigerian pirates have hijacked a French-owned Luxembourg-flagged tanker along with its 17-member crew off Ivory Coast, Ivorian officials and the International Maritime Bureau said on Monday. The Gulf of Guinea area is second only to the waters off Somalia for piracy and there has been a spate of violent attacks in vessels in recent days, prompting the bureau to issue a security alert for the region. The Gascogne was the second vessel to be seized off Ivory Coast in less than three weeks and the first to have been taken so far from shore. Many of the pirate gangs are offshoots of militant groups that once operated in Nigeria’s … Continue reading
