Fighting breaks out between Kabila forces and the M23

By Diana Katabarwa in Kampala Fighting has broken down between the March 23 Movement (M23) and Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo  (The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo –FARDC) jointly with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) after the latter launched an attack on the M23  positions in Kanyaruchinya village 10 kms from Goma town. According to sources close to the M23, the attack was repulsed and the attackers sent back to Muja and by late afternoon Monday, there was still heavy fighting going on in Muningi with FARDC shelling M23 positions. 97 women, 33 girls allegedly raped by Kabila’s soldiers

Democratic Republic of Congo troops (above) raped at least 97 women and 33 girls, some as young as 6, in the country’s volatile east after they fled from advancing M23 rebels in late November, according to a U.N. report released on Wednesday. The majority of the rapes by the Congolese army (FARDC) occurred in Minova during a two-day period, and most cases documented by U.N. M23 appeals to South Africans not to send troops to the DRC

By Henry D Gombya The President of the March 23 (M23) Movement has made an appeal to the people of South Africa through their parliament to convince the government of President Jacob Zuma not to send South African troops to take part in the UN-mandated Special Brigade set to enter the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and fight rebels engaged in disputes with Mr Kabila. South Africa confirms it will send troops to fight rebels in DRC

South African troops like these will soon be in the dense forests of eastern DRC fighting on the side of Joseph Kabila.

By Richard A Luce South Africa has confirmed the country will provide troops to a UN intervention force that is set to be sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to fight armed groups opposed to the government of DRC President Joseph Kabila. A South African military spokesman was quoted Sunday as saying the troops deployment to the DRC had nothing to do with what has recently taken place in the Central African Republic where 13 South African soldiers were early this month killed during a coup d’état that ousted President Francois Bozize from power.
