Attack on convoy in South Sudan leaves 100 dead

South Sudan rebels like these are often well-armed. Source of their arms is unknown.

More than 100 people have been killed in South Sudan in an attack by rebels and ethnic allies on a convoy of families from a rival tribe and their cattle, an official said Sunday. Since breaking from Sudan in 2011, oil-producing South Sudan has struggled to assert control over remote territories awash with weapons after a 1983-2005 war with the north and torn by ethnic rivalries. The attack on Friday was the worst violence in Jonglei State since 900 people were killed there in tribal attacks linked to cattle rustling in 2011, the United Nations said. Rebels loyal to former theology student David Yau Yau and members of the Murle … Continue reading

South Sudan arrests journalists for failing to report Kiir speech

South Sudan has arrested two state broadcast journalists for failing to ensure coverage of a crucial speech by President Salva Kiir, a government official said on Sunday, prompting an outcry from an international media watchdog. Journalists often complain of persecution by the security services of the African republic that seceded from Sudan in 2011. That year, Juba authorities closed a newspaper after it criticized Kiir for allowing his daughter to marry a foreigner. The government of South Sudan’s Western Bahr El Ghazal state said it had detained two senior staff at its broadcaster for “administrative issues” after the station failed to cover Kiir’s visit to the town of Wau last … Continue reading

Mr Kiir told South Sudanese state media he hoped for a “celebration” after meeting Mr Bashir. Previously, spokesmen for both negotiating teams said substantial progress had been made on many of the issues. The main summit, which … Continue reading

African Union in disarray as Sudan and Malawi ‘lock horns’

By Henry D Gombya This year’s African Union (AU) summit due to be held in Malawi next month has been thrown into disarray after Malawian President Joyce Banda insisted her country would rather not host the summit if Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir were to attend. Soon after coming to power following the death in office of President Bingu wa Mutharika, Mrs Banda made it clear that as a state party to the Rome Statute, Gen Bashir who for the last two years has been dodging an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) that want to try him for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, would not be … Continue reading
