‘Hands off our President’ – Angry Kenyans tell Britain

By Henry D Gombya Kenyans have reacted angrily over yesterday’s leading story in which we showed how the British government had treated their leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta when he appeared in England for the first time as president to attend the Somalia Conference. Thousands of angry readers bombarded us with comments ranging from ones that told Britain in no uncertain terms that the days of colonialism were over and that Kenya was now her own master, to those that were hostile to this writer for daring to show what other newspapers, both here in London and in Nairobi failed to notice. Others had the propensity to even call us names. … Continue reading

Kenyatta and Museveni ‘humiliated’ at the Somalia Conference

British Foreign Secretary William Hague holds talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta "in the margins of the London Somalia conference..." as put by the FCO in London yesterday.

By Henry D Gombya The United Kingdom today stands accused of ’humiliating’ the leaders of two countries that have made peace possible in what was until only recently a failed Horn of Africa country that comes under the name of Somalia, by making sure that they were not photographed alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron. After the failure of what was once the world’s only super power, the United States of America (USA) to bring order to a battle-ridden Somalia, and after the failure of Ethiopia under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Zenawi to do the same, in came Uganda under the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni who sent … Continue reading

Journalism profession in Uganda most dangerous – rights body

British Foreign Secretary William Hague on World Press Day: “We all owe a debt of gratitude to the courageous journalists who risk imprisonment, injury and death to report from repressive countries or conflict zones around the world."

The failure of the Ugandan government to protect journalists is rendering the journalism profession in the East African country the most dangerous. According to a report by the Uganda-Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-Uganda), the rights body says it is greatly concerned by the worsening trend of the safety and security of media practitioners in Uganda and government’s reluctance to bring this situation to a halt. A report on the Safety and Security of Journalists in Uganda which assesses the trend for the last two years shows that the wellbeing of journalists is threatened by a wide range of issues, namely; the restrictive legal regime, impunity, lack of professionalism among … Continue reading

Ugandan tycoon set to take African flags into space

Africa

At just 31 years old, and already heading a vast business empire he built from scratch, Ashish Thakkar has been referred to by some as Africa’s youngest billionaire. But this is a label the Ugandan entrepreneur doesn’t want to associate himself with. “Money should never be a measurement for anything,” says Thakkar, founder of the pan-African multi-sector business conglomerate Mara Group. “I like to see myself as an entrepreneur that’s being disruptive — I like to be the underdog in a lot of cases,” he adds. “It’s all about how you go about it; but one thing I definitely don’t want to be known as is as ‘Africa’s youngest billionaire.’” … Continue reading
