David Cameron is set to step down this Wednesday as Prime Minister and hand over power to Theresa May, the Member of Parliament for Maidenhead since 1997 and who has been Home Secretary since she was appointed by the outgoing prime minister in 2010.

Dramatic events in the Palace of Westminster today saw Andrea Leadsom, the only other candidate who was set to face Conservative Party members to choose between her and Mrs May to select a new PM, drop out dramatically with rumours following in her wake that she had been hounded out of her bid for power by some in her party who wanted to see the Home Secretary emerge unopposed as the new PM.

A few moments ago, Mr Cameron came out of No.10 Downing Street to confirm that he would be going to meet Her Majesty the Queen on Wednesday after attending Prime Minister’s Questions in parliament to offer his resignation and that Mrs May will on Wednesday evening become Britain’s only second woman to hold the office of Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher.
