African nations’ ulterior motive to joining UN intervention force

In March, the United Nations approved a so-called “intervention brigade,” the first of its kind, to carry out offensives against militant groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo‘s conflict-ridden eastern regions. Now the brigade has been formally organized, and as Congo analyst Jason Stearns explains, its impact is likely to be felt across the continent. The intervention brigade is on its way, and it has inspired Cassandras and Pollyannas alike. Most of the talk has focused on the military efficacy of the brigade, which will consist of 3,069 troops from southern African countries and will be led by a Tanzanian general. This focus is not surprising, given the robust mandate … Continue reading

Five exit strategies for long-term solution to problems in Goma

With the on-going conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the emergence of Rwanda’s proxy, M23, Theogene Rudasingwa puts forward five exit strategies to facilitate a long-term solution to problems in the region. The international community (read: western powers) have put pressure on [President Paul] Kagame to have his creation and proxy, M23, withdraw from Goma. President [Joseph] Kabila is being pressurized to talk to M23, to listen to their grievances. As we have argued, the problems of eastern DRC are partly a Congolese problem of internal weaknesses and, in this latest war, largely due to Rwanda’s internal political and human rights crisis. If the international community is asking … Continue reading

The gist of the failure of the U.N. panel on DR Congo

By David N Matsanga Uganda has come under heavy criticisms on the question of Eastern Congo where rebels have taken over governance since March 23rd 2012.  The unnecessary toxins of gossip heaped on my country that has endured the burden of pacifying Somalia, has today forced me  to issue this statement in support of the government of Uganda on the current crisis in DRC. It is a great opportunity for Africa World Media Ltd to address the UN Security Council and the entire world on the fighting in Eastern DRC, on the report of the UN Panel on the security situation in DRC and on the current M23 rebels of the … Continue reading

The Kivus: Congo’s New Shame, Rwanda’s Old Game

The Kivus region of eastern Congo again faces escalating violence, including by a rebel force acting as a proxy of neighbouring Rwanda. To stop the repetitive cycle of rebellion and avoid large-scale killing, donors and African mediators need to move from crisis management to conflict resolution with the right set of pressures on Kigali and Kinshasa. Eastern Congo: Why Stabilisation Failed, the latest briefing from the International Crisis Group, examines the conflict since Bosco Ntaganda’s mutiny in April 2012 and the creation of the 23 March rebel movement (M23). Though a new situation, today’s problems closely resemble yesterdays, which is hardly surprising because past peace deals were never implemented. To … Continue reading

Why Africa’s justice system ought to be strengthened

In the wake of a recent court case in London where two Congolese immigrants to Great Britain were sent to life in prison after being found guilty of murdering a 15-year old boy they thought was possessed with witchcraft, Kofi Akosah-Sarpong looks at the implication of witchcraft on African society and how to tackle these destructive practices. As Africa flowers and its traditional values play out naturally with international ideals, the ensuing schisms are helping to refine some toxic African values that have been entangling Africans’ wellbeing. The conviction for life in London, UK of Eric Bikubi and Magalie Bamu of murdering Bamu’s 15-year-old brother Kristy, accused of using witchcraft … Continue reading
