The Ugandan High Court has granted a non-cash UGX400 million (approx. £94,000) bail to former Ugandan presidential candidate Dr Kiiza Besigye who for the last two months has been incarcerated in Luzira Maximum Security prison on the outskirts of Kampala after being charged with treason.
High Court Judge Justice Wilson Masalu Musene delivered the judgement, Tuesday after Dr Besigye’s lawyers Fredrick Mpanga and Earnest Kalibbala applied for bail arguing that their client had stayed in prison without the state showing any intention to conclude its investigation, adding that it seemed like there was a deliberate move to let Besigye remain incarcerated.
The advocates added that their client was of advanced age (60), had a permanent residence in the country and was ready to appear before the court as was required. Justice Musene Masalu considered Besigye’s bail submission on a non cash bail worth UGX 100 million and the same amount for his four sureties including, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president Mugisha Muntu, General Secretary of FDC party, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the legislator for Rukungiri Municipality Roland Mugume and Rubaga Division mayor, Joyce Ssebuggwawo.
