Tourists defy Ebola threat to spend time with chimps in Uganda

By Nkonge I Kaggwa on Ngamba Island
In spite of the effect the Ebola pandemic has had on the tourism sector in Africa, Uganda continues to have scores of tourists flocking into the country to enjoy this year’s festive season aligning with government’s position that there is no Ebola in Uganda.
There have been reports from Western media saying the African tourism sector has greatly been affected since the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Ebola hit the West African countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, killing over 4,500 people in the first quarter of the year. African Adventure Travellers, a tourist company in Uganda, organized a guided tour for The London Evening Post (The LEP) to clear the air surrounding Ugandan tourism with a major focus on chimpanzees. Chimpanzees share the closest DNA element to humans with over 98.7 per cent which means that they contract diseases like those contracted by human beings and can therefore be treated with the same medicines that treat human beings.
During the tour at Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary on Ngamba Island, Danish volunteer Cecilia Nisted told The LEP that she is not scared of the disease as it is thousands of miles away. “Oh! Ebola is thousands of miles away from Uganda and cannot concern us here,” she said. “There is no Ebola here and tourists should feel free to come and enjoy”, she added. Nisted who has spent over two weeks volunteering at the sanctuary has learned nearly all the names of the Chimpanzees on the Island including, Sarah, Medina, Coco, Baron, Megai, Eddy, Kalema, Asega, Maawa among others.
These tourists have found out that there is no Ebola in Uganda and the flash information of Ebola in Uganda will not stand the time. This is to let the rest know that it is true there is no Ebola in Uganda come see the “pearl of Africa”.
Ohhh..What a cute gorilla! I am really surprised why people are so much tensed for Ebola, whereas it is clearly notified that Ebola has only affected to South Africa not East Africa. Thanks for this post.
