Kerry arrives in Geneva as hope of agreement on Iran looms

US Secretary of State John Kerry. His imminent arrival in Geneva raised hopes a deal with Iran may be imminent.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is due to arrive in Geneva this morning (Saturday) to help negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran. The foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany are also expected there, amid hopes of an agreement that would see Iran curb uranium enrichment in return for a loosening of sanctions. The foreign ministers of Russia and Iran are already at the Geneva conference, which began on Wednesday. Some US lawmakers say they will push for more sanctions if the talks fail. US President Barack Obama sets out US drone policy

President Obama has said the US is safer because of his administration’s efforts to combat militancy, in a speech defending the use of drones. In a major speech on counter-terrorism, he is also expected to offer some transparency over the strikes. The speech comes a day after the US said publicly for the first time that drones had killed four US citizens.
